Green garb. Green beer. T-shirts that say, “Kiss me, I’m Irish”. From city-wide celebrations to family traditions, there are few things as American as St. Patrick’s Day.
Why is that, you ask? Let’s explain. Yes, St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, the way his day is celebrated today is largely shaped by Irish immigrants and their descendants in the United States. Over time, the holiday evolved into a lively cultural celebration on this side of the Atlantic. In many ways, modern St. Patrick’s Day has become an American tradition inspired by Irish heritage.
St. Patrick’s Day is the rip-roaring good time that it is thanks to Irish-American ingenuity. And it’s the Yank-influenced twist on this Irish holiday that is the reason St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most popular holidays.

The U.S. is fortunate to have hosted the world’s largest Irish immigrant population in the 19th century. During the height of the potato famine, almost 2 million Irish landed on our shores. But the immigrants would have celebrated St. Patrick’s Day much differently in the Motherland, where pubs were closed on the special day until 1961.
The famine forced these immigrants out of Ireland. To ease their homesickness, they transformed St. Patrick’s Day from a solemn holy day into a celebration of Irish heritage. As the celebration spread throughout the U.S., it became a way for Irish-Americans to “stake their claim” in American culture. Eventually, St. Patrick’s Day became the lively, fun-filled holiday we know today.
These days, it seems the entire world is Irish on March 17th. In Egypt, the Pyramids of Giza glow green. And Australia gets in on the fun by lighting the Sydney Opera House in green. The Caribbean island of Montserrat celebrates St. Patty’s Day for 10 days. Even Moscow and Japan put on St. Patty’s Day Parades.
And St. Patrick’s adopted homeland? When the Irish saw Americanized St. Patrick’s Day celebrations on television, they jumped on the partying bandwagon. Today, Ireland celebrates its patron saint with festivals, parades, and national revelry. But the biggest and best celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day are still in the U.S.

Seeing as how St. Patrick’s Day as we know it was basically invented in the U.S., we all have to do our part to keep the ‘craic’ going (that’s Irish slang for a poppin’ good time).
Knowing how to have a good natter like a deadly lad is one way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. And that’s Irish for chewing the fat like a cool Irish bro. Below, we have more tips for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.
Spend March 16th watching movies to immerse yourself in Irish culture. We list our faves below, and if you watch them all, you might find a little Irish brogue in the way you speak.
Okay, we know this one sounds elementary. Everyone knows you’re supposed to wear green on St. Patty’s Day. But too many revelers fall short with just a pair of green earrings or chintzy t-shirts off the rack.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in finery with a new green dress or suit. Or dress up in a green plunge-neck tank with black jeans. Complete the look with a green pair of Reebok Classics. If you Scrooge, and choose not to sport your lime hues, prepare to have your toes stepped on.
The Irish toast, or “Sláinte,” is a witty blessing and a way to celebrate connection around a glass of Guinness. Learning a handful of these one-liners is a sure-fire way to keep the Irish vibe in your St. Patty’s Day celebrations. Below are a few you can try.
Real Irish dancing involves complex footwork without moving your upper body. Dancers spend years mastering the precise movements for their performances.
Not to worry, after a few Irish toasts with the requisite Irish ales, you’ll know everything you need to know about Irish Dance.
In Ireland, the traditional meal for St. Patrick’s Day was boiled ham and cabbage. In the States, impoverished Irish immigrants had to purchase salted beef from the ship’s cooks for a penny a pound. They boiled the beef three times, the last time in cabbage, to remove as much salt as possible. The resulting dish, corned beef and cabbage, is an American St. Patrick’s Day staple.
