The story of Saint Patrick dates back more than 1500 years. March 17th, the date St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated, marks the anniversary of his death way back in the 5th century. Not much is known about him as a person. But it was his return to Ireland as a priest, converting citizens to Christianity, that endeared him to the church and eventually sainthood.
Saint Patrick was actually born in Britain, not Ireland. When he was a teenager, unbeknownst to most, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders. He was enslaved to a Celtic priest in what is now Northern Ireland. He was able to escape and go back to Britain eventually. But Saint Patrick returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary and later a priest.
According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock to endearingly represent the Holy Trinity when he first introduced Christianity to Ireland. Centuries after his passing, it was in 1631 that the church first established a Feast Day honoring St. Patrick. The shamrock became his commemorative symbol.
St. Patrick’s Day continues to be celebrated annually in Ireland and is one of the biggest holidays in their cultural calendar. It is also a national holiday, with numerous events happening around the country to commemorate the nation’s patron saint.
When Americans think of St. Patrick’s Day, it’s usually filled with emerald green clothing, drinking green beer, and cheering on St. Patrick’s Day parades that stretch through city streets. Those traditions weren’t brought over from Ireland. Instead, they started right here. In fact, the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration happened in Boston in 1737. It was organized by Irish immigrants wanting to celebrate their patron saint and help distressed Irish in the city.
Fast forward to 1762 in New York City when a band of Irishmen serving in the British army started the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in the U.S. Today, it is the largest and longest-running St. Patrick’s Day parade around the world.
